Drywall dust is not ordinary dust. It is fine enough to hang in the air for hours, it settles on everything twice, and cleaning a room in the wrong order simply moves it somewhere else.
- Cabinets and closets first, inside and out
- Ceiling fans, fixtures and vent covers
- Door frames, ledges and window tracks
- Baseboards and switch plates last of the verticals
- Floors vacuumed and mopped at the very end
- A second pass where dust is still settling
Almost everything about a post-construction clean is sequence. Dust falls, so anything cleaned below something dirty gets dirty again. Working strictly top-down — and leaving the floors until everything above them is done — is the difference between one visit and three.
It also keeps settling. A house finished last week is still shedding from ledges, tracks and the tops of doors, which is why a single pass on day one often disappoints. Booking after the trades have genuinely finished beats booking early.

Is this the same as a builder’s final clean?
No. A builder’s rough clean removes debris so the site can be handed over. This is the detail clean that makes the house liveable — interiors, fixtures, tracks and floors, done in an order that stops dust resettling.
When should I book it?
After the trades have genuinely finished. Booking while work is still going on means paying to clean dust that is about to be replaced. If there is a punch list outstanding, wait for it.
Will one visit be enough?
Usually, if the work is finished. If the house is very new it can keep shedding from ledges and tracks for a couple of weeks, and a second lighter pass a fortnight later is worth more than a bigger first one.
Do you remove construction debris?
